Resusci Anne Torso

We now have our own Resusce Annie to practice Rescue Breaths and Artificial Ventilation (CPR to older members!).

There are 8 sports diver students in training of which Paul, Sarah and Stephen have completed their Sports Diver lectures and are ready to do the exam.  Can all students complete the front page of their Qualification book, including their photo otherwise they cannot be signed off for their qualification.

In the pool Sports Diver students are doing rescue skills, which is going well and we have also introduced a poolside session with Resusce Annie to practice Rescue Breaths and Artificial Ventilation (CPR to older members!).

There will be another trip to Stoney Cove in the summer for Sports Diver students to carry out their confined water skills.  Date to be confirmed but this dive will also be open for anyone that wants to get wet. Matthew’s Ocean Diver training is also going well.  Adam is currently doing dry suit training in preparation for his first sheltered water dives

Gary and Tel have attended Stoney Cove for the practical instructor exam the final assault on their Open Water Instructor qualification. Fingers crossed!

Buoyancy - Feedback from BSAC shows there will be a buoyancy workshop issued to all clubs as they feel the PADI system covers buoyancy and trim better.

11. Sunday nights

After the pool session, join us for a drink at 9.15 ish in the bowling / snooker club (behind the pool).  Everyone welcome and we don’t just talk about diving!  Get to know fellow club members.  Lectures are generally held here before pool sessions.  Some of the committee are members and can sign you in on the club’s behalf.

Adam Rogers and Matthew Shepherd have passed the Ocean Theory exam.

Paul Allsop is an Ocean Diver

Gary Neal is now an Open Water Instructor

Terry Rogers is a Theory Instructor.

To Lucy and Peter on the announcement of their good news – Double pool fees on a Sunday night now Lucy!

You should be aware of your turn on the pool rota roughly 2/3 times a year (see website, notice board and emails) - collecting pool fees and also acting as dry / pool side supervision.  Thanks to all those who take a turn.  PLEASE try to make your selected night as it means people don’t miss out on having a swim because they are forced to do the pool rota.  If you can’t do it let someone know.  A reminder text is sent the Thursday before your turn.  It still seems Peter or Arthur ended up doing it when they shouldn’t have to.

January 2006 BSAC Incident report - At a diving club pool night an individual had swum 30 lengths of the pool.  He stopped swimming and hung in the water. The swimmer behind him noticed and tapped him on the shoulder. There was no response and quickly realising that there was a problem she rolled him over and called for assistance. Others helped to remove him from the water. Resuscitation techniques were applied including a defibrillator. The casualty was taken to hospital and made a good recovery. Granted this person had history of heart problems but it just shows the need to be vigilant when doing the pool rota.

Plaice

Queen ScallopPLAICE - Further Details Visit FishBase by clicking Name of fish below this picture

A flat fish that can reach 60cm - 90cm. The upperside is brown with large orange or orangey-yellow spots - great camouflage. Underside is white, sometimes with dark blotches. It can flap its fins to cover itself with bottom sediment to hide. It swims by undulating its body in a series of waves passing from head to tail and glides to rest. Feeds on worms in winter and shellfish in summer. Maturity is reached according to size, 30 - 40 cm, rather than age. Found from the shoreline down to about 100 m.  Young plaice live on the sand and mudflats. At a month old (2 cm long) a strange change takes place. Its body becomes twisted and the deformation brings its left eye gradually over onto the right side. They don’t swim into goody bags when coaxed!
